The Faithful God of Psalm 89
One of the most important principles of Bible study is learning to read Scripture in its context. Verses are often beautiful and encouraging on their own, but when we understand why they were written and what surrounds them, their meaning becomes even richer.
Psalm 89 is a wonderful example. While it is often remembered for its references to God's faithfulness, the full psalm takes us on a journey from praise, through perplexity, and ultimately back to worship.
Have you ever looked at your circumstances and wondered how they fit with God’s promises? That is exactly where the writer of Psalm 89 finds himself. The psalm begins with joyful praise as Ethan celebrates the steadfast love and faithfulness of God.
Ethan was an Ezrahite, a group closely connected with the Levites and their work in the temple. The Ezrahites likely played an important role in leading worship, providing music for sacred gatherings, and helping teach God’s people. Their lives were devoted to supporting the spiritual life of the nation and ensuring that worship was carried out according to God’s design.”
As the psalm unfolds, the tone changes. The psalmist looks around and sees circumstances that seem completely at odds with what God had promised. The kingdom appears to be in decline, and he honestly brings his confusion before the Lord. He doesn’t hide his questions or pretend everything makes sense.
What I love about Psalm 89 is that it teaches us that faith is not the absence of questions. Genuine faith brings those questions to God while continuing to trust His character. The psalmist’s confidence is anchored not in what he sees, but in who God is. He knows that God cannot break His covenant or fail to keep His word.
As believers, we have an even greater reason for confidence. The covenant promises made to David ultimately find their fulfillment in Jesus Christ, the eternal King. God’s faithfulness to His promises throughout history assures us that present trials, disappointments, and unanswered questions do not cancel His purposes.
Psalm 89 reminds us to measure God by His character rather than by our circumstances. Situations change. Feelings fluctuate. Understanding comes and goes. But God’s faithfulness remains constant. Even when we cannot trace His hand, we can trust His heart.
Like the psalmist, may we bring our questions honestly before the Lord while holding firmly to the truth that He is faithful. And may we end where Psalm 89 ends—not in despair, but in worship:
“Praise be to the Lord forever! Amen and Amen.” (Psalm 89:52)
