It Reaches the Skies
“For great is your love, higher than the heavens; your faithfulness reaches to the skies.” Psalm 108:4
There is something beautiful about standing beneath a rainbow stretching across the sky. It reminds us that God’s promises are bigger than our circumstances, higher than our fears, and more enduring than our changing emotions.
In Psalm 108, David begins with a declaration: “My heart is steadfast, O God.” Before he speaks of victories, before he asks for help, before he faces his enemies, David fixes his heart on praise. Why? Because he knows the character of the God he serves.
I have to admit there was a season in my life when I wasn’t choosing praise. I loved God, but I had developed expectations of Him that were never actually found in His Word. When life didn’t unfold the way I thought it should, I found myself disappointed—not so much in my circumstances as in God Himself.
What I eventually learned was that my disappointment wasn’t rooted in God’s unfaithfulness. It was rooted in my misunderstanding of God, His Word, and my relationship with Him.
One of the books God used profoundly in my life during that season was When God Doesn’t Make Sense by Dr James Dobson. Through that book, I began to see that many of my struggles came from expectations God had never promised to fulfill. I had unknowingly created a version of God who operated according to my assumptions rather than according to His Word.
As my expectations changed, so did my perspective. I began to see that God had been faithful all along. The problem wasn’t His character—it was my understanding of His character.
That realization changed everything.
As I look at this picture I took of a rainbow in the sky over our farm my eyes are drawn upward. The rainbow arches over the landscape, the sun breaks through the clouds, and the sky seems endless.
David uses similar imagery when he says God’s faithfulness reaches to the skies. He is describing something immeasurable. As far as the eye can see and beyond, God’s faithfulness extends farther still.
David had experienced both mountaintops and valleys. He knew triumph and failure, joy and sorrow. Yet he could confidently proclaim God’s faithfulness because he had seen it proven again and again.
Perhaps today you are struggling with disappointment. Maybe things haven’t happened the way you expected. If so, I encourage you to bring those disappointments honestly before the Lord. Ask Him to reveal whether your expectations are rooted in His promises or in your assumptions. You may discover, as I did, that God has been faithful all along.
Like David let us praise God not only for what He has done, but for who He is.
