Memorial Day
Psalm 63:7–8 reveals a quiet, deeply rooted kind of JOY:
“For You have been my help, and in the shadow of Your wings I will sing for JOY.” Vs 7.
David wrote these words in the wilderness during a difficult season, yet he still sang for joy because his confidence was rooted in God’s faithfulness, not his circumstances.
That truth feels especially meaningful on Memorial Day weekend. This is a weekend of both gratitude and remembrance — honoring fallen heroes who gave their lives for our freedom, while also remembering loved ones whose absence is deeply felt.
Psalm 63 reminds us that even in seasons of loss, we are held securely under God’s care. True joy is not pretending life is easy; it is trusting that God remains faithful through every season.
“My soul follows close behind You; Your right hand upholds me.” Vs 8.
What a beautiful reminder for this Memorial Day weekend: even in our remembering, God is still holding us close.
Memorial Day is a day to honor the fallen heroes who gave their lives for our freedom. But for many of us, it is also a day of remembering loved ones whose absence is deeply felt.
We remember their voices, their laughter, and the love they left behind. And while remembrance often carries sorrow, for those who know Jesus, it also carries hope.
One of the greatest promises of heaven is that our rejoicing will never end. Here on earth, joy is often touched by loss and pain, but in Christ there is coming a day when every tear will be wiped away and every burden lifted.
The joy we know now is only a glimpse of the eternal joy waiting in His presence. No more separation. No more grief. Only perfect peace with the Savior who carries us through every season of life.
And perhaps that is the sweetest hope of all — the joy we have in Jesus is not temporary. It is eternal.
Greater love has no one than this, than to lay down one’s life for his friends.” — John 15:13
Memorial Day is wrapped in both sorrow and gratitude. We pause to remember those who gave everything so others could live in freedom. Their sacrifice reflects the deepest kind of love — a love willing to give, serve, and protect.
Yet even in remembrance, Scripture also calls us to joy.
Not a shallow happiness that ignores pain, but a deep joy rooted in gratitude, hope, and love. Because of sacrifice, we cherish freedom more deeply. Because of loss, we hold our loved ones closer. And because Christ laid down His life for us all, we know that love is stronger than death.
Joy and remembrance can walk hand in hand.
Today, may we honor the fallen with thankful hearts, cherish the freedoms purchased at great cost, and live lives filled with kindness, courage, and joy worthy of their sacrifice.
