Never Beyond His Watch
Tonight, after returning from a walk, I heard a commotion on our porch. A little bird was making a terrible racket. I wasn't sure what had happened—perhaps it had fallen from a nest—so I decided to leave it alone.
As I walked toward the peonies, I heard an even louder screeching overhead. Looking up to the peak of the roof, I spotted what I believe was the mother bird. She was clearly distressed and watching every movement below. Her cries revealed her concern for her little one.
As I stood there, Psalm 91:4 came to mind:
"He will cover you with His feathers, and under His wings you will find refuge; His faithfulness will be your shield and rampart."
That mother bird's protective instinct reminded me of God's heart toward His children. Just as she watched over her vulnerable chick, our Heavenly Father watches over us. We may not always see Him at work, but His eye is upon us, His care surrounds us, and His faithfulness never fails.
Perhaps that's why the psalm doesn't say God's power is our shield—it says His faithfulness is. Tonight, a worried mother bird became a living reminder that we are never beyond the watchful care of our faithful God.
