I Was Once Young…

Once I Was Young

"I have been young, and now am old; yet I have not seen the righteous forsaken..." — Psalm 37:25

There I stood, a young woman with dreams in my heart and a telephone receiver in my hand.

If I could have reached through time and whispered something into that young girl's ear, I wonder what I would have said.

I might have told her there would be days of incredible joy and days of heartbreaking sorrow. That she would fall in love, become a wife, a mother, and eventually a grandmother. I would tell her that she would laugh until tears rolled down her cheeks—and cry enough tears to fill a river.

I would tell her that life wouldn't always make sense. Some prayers would seem to go unanswered. Some goodbyes would come far too soon. There would be disappointments she never imagined and blessings she never dared to dream possible.

But more than anything, I would tell her this:

God will be faithful. Every. Single. Time.

Looking back now, I don't remember every phone call I made, but I remember the One who never missed a single cry of my heart.

He was there in the celebrations.

He was there in the hospital rooms.

He was there in the moments of grief.

He was there when I didn't know which way to turn.

The years have changed my appearance, but they have also deepened my confidence in the Lord. Age has a beautiful way of replacing youthful certainty in ourselves with quiet confidence in God's faithfulness.

The young woman in this picture couldn't see what was ahead.

The older woman looking back can clearly see the fingerprints of God all along the journey.

If you're young, trust Him with your future.

If you're older, thank Him for His faithfulness.

And wherever you are on life's journey, remember this:

The God who carried you yesterday is the same God who will carry you tomorrow.

“Once I was young... now I am old... and I can confidently tell you that God has never failed me.”
