Joy that a Child is Born

In John 16:21, Jesus used the powerful image of childbirth to describe JOY that comes after sorrow.

“A woman giving birth to a child has pain because her time has come; but when her baby is born she does not remember the anguish because of her JOY…”

The pain was real. The anguish was real. Yet joy became greater than the suffering that came before it.

This verse reminds us that God often brings His deepest joy through seasons that first require endurance, waiting, and tears. Sometimes we walk through moments that feel heavy and painful, wondering if the struggle will ever end. But Jesus teaches us that sorrow is not the conclusion of the story.

The word joy here speaks of overwhelming gladness — a joy so profound that it changes perspective. The mother still remembers the journey, but the gift she now holds makes the suffering worth it.

That is often how God works in our lives. He can bring beauty out of pain, hope out of heartbreak, and rejoicing out of seasons we thought would break us. Joy does not mean the struggle never happened; it means God’s goodness became greater than the sorrow.

And perhaps that is one of the sweetest truths of all: when God gives joy, it has the power to outshine the pain that came before it.
