Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem

This is one of the most emotional moments in Jesus’ ministry and it happened only 2 days before he was crucified at Jerusalem.

When He looked out over Jerusalem, He wasn’t speaking in anger—He was speaking from a broken heart.

Here’s what He was saying to the nation of Israel:

You’ve been resisting God for a long time.

God sent prophets again and again to guide you and call you back… but instead of listening, many were rejected—even killed.

I wanted to protect you.

“Like a hen gathers her chicks under her wings…”

Such a tender picture.

Jesus was saying:
“I wanted to cover you, protect you, and bring you close— from danger, from judgment, from what was coming.”

…but you were unwilling.

Not unable.

Unwilling.

The tragedy isn’t that God didn’t reach out—
it’s that His people didn’t respond.

Turning away from Him comes with real consequences.

But this isn’t the end of the story.

“You will not see Me again until you say,
‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.’”

There is still hope.

There will come a day of recognition…

A turning of hearts…

A moment when Jesus is finally received.

What this means—for them and for us:

“I have been reaching for you again and again.”

“I wanted to bring you close and keep you safe.”

“But I won’t force you—you must come willingly.”

“And I am still waiting for the day you do.”

This is one of the few places in Scripture where you can almost feel Jesus grieving…

Because the people He loved were missing what He came to give them.

And maybe the question isn’t just when Israel will say it…

Maybe the question is:

WILL WE?

Because that same invitation still stands today—

To recognize Him…

To receive Him…

And, to finally welcome Him into our life.
